Physiotherapy

Quality care from people who care.

Physiotherapy in Terrace and Kitimat BC

Physiotherapy is a multifaceted healthcare profession dedicated to helping people to maximize their ability to move throughout their lifespan. Physiotherapy is anchored in movement sciences and thereby identifies functional movement disorders that occur due to injury, illness, over use or under use and aims to enhance or restore function of multiple body systems. Physiotherapists are committed to a holistic approach to maintaining or improving health, lifestyle and quality of life through a broad range of therapeutic interventions. Physiotherapy is about improving function.

Physiotherapists can improve a person’s quality of life by:
  • Diagnosing the source of movement impairment and facilitating progressive restoration of optimal function.
  • Management of acute and chronic conditions that lead to limitations related to work, daily living and active living.
  • Promoting optimal mobility, physical activity and health and wellness.
  • Educating and providing clients with support programs to maintain and improve health and function and prevent re-occurrence, re-injury or age/disease related functional decline.

Scope of Physiotherapy

Exercise Therapy and Active Rehabilitation
Exercise and active rehabilitation are the cornerstones to recovering from injury or illness and restoring optimal function. Specific stretching, strengthening and stabilization exercises are tailored to each person’s functional ability and stage of recovery. We have extensive knowledge and experience with movement pattern faults that are often the source of delayed recovery.

Prehabilitation is a term given to exercise-based rehabilitation BEFORE a surgical procedure (for example
hip or knee replacement or back surgery). Research shows that people who are as fit as possible and who
have exercised the muscles specific to the surgical area have fewer post-surgical complications and
          recover faster from the procedure.

          Fitness Assessments and Exercise Programs
All our therapists have extensive knowledge and backgrounds within the field of exercise science.
We are able to provide exercise programs for people of all abilities and performance levels. We can
work with you to achieve your personal best within your chosen sport or activity based on the scientific
          principles of strength and conditioning.

Orthopaedics
Orthopaedic Physiotherapy is the treatment of musculoskeletal impairments. It involves regaining appropriate health and function of structures surrounding the joints and normalizing the biomechanics following any injury or disease. Orthopaedic Physiotherapy focuses on:
  • Impaired posture
  • Impaired muscle function
  • Impaired joint mobility
  • Motor function
  • Muscle performance
  • Range of motion associated with connective tissue dysfunctions
  • Localized inflammation, such as in muscle pain, strain or tears
  • Primary prevention / Injury risk reduction

Manual Therapy
Manual therapy involves the mobilization of the joints of the spine and extremities to improve movement within the joints, as well as nerve and soft tissue. Several techniques can be used to restore the right amount of movement to help the body move through greater range and quality of movement.

Sports Physiotherapy
Sports physiotherapy is a sub-specialty for which the physiotherapist has advanced knowledge and direct experience with athletes. This entails and intimate understanding of the biomechanics of a particular sport, athlete development and physiologic training principles. Our therapists have varied experiences as competitive athletes, coaches, and athletic trainers, and together have hundreds of hours of local, provincial, and national sports experience.

Athletic Taping and Bracing
Taping and bracing include techniques and products to prevent injuries and to support and protect body parts after injury. This can help facilitate muscle/tendon relaxation to allow range of motion and earlier return to sport, activity or work. Our therapists have extensive knowledge of these techniques and current products.

Concussion Management
We provide baseline testing, evaluation and rehabilitation based on the latest clinical research and best practice for concussion management. Our program includes baseline testing with ImPACT testing as well as visual and balance testing. Post concussion services include vestibular and oculo-motor rehabilitation as well as manual and exertion-based physiotherapy. We have partnered with ADVANCE CONCUSSION in Vancouver to deliver the most comprehensive concussion rehabilitation in Northwest British Columbia.

Medical Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been used for centuries to treat a number of conditions. Medical Acupuncture combines traditional acupuncture with medical and anatomical knowledge.

          Gokavi Transverse Technique (GTT)
GTT is a form of Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) that helps to reduce tight bands of muscle and fascia or
trigger points that are often the source of pain and movement dysfunctions.

Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy treatments aim to affect tissue healing and the restoration of normal tissue function.
  • Ultrasound
  • Interferential current (IFC)
  • Neuromuscular Stimulation (NMES)
  • Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Running Assessments
We will complete a thorough assessment of your core and lower extremity range of motion and strength as well as movement pattern coordination followed by basic video analysis of your running form. Based on our findings we will provide feedback, education and resources for you to improve your running efficiency and to help you prevent injuries and RUN HAPPY!
Our physiotherapy and rehabilitation goals are your goals.

Our goal is to keep you moving. Call if you need help!
