Women's Health
Pelvic Pain and Incontinence
Pelvic Health concerns are far too common and rarely talked about. Many women suffer silently without realizing that there are effective, evidence-based treatment solutions that can significantly improve quality of life. Research has shown that Physiotherapists with specialized training in Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation should be the first line of defense, before surgical consideration, for incontinence. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction can be caused by either weak (hypotonic) or tight (hypertonic) pelvic floor muscles which contribute to a variety of disorders that can impact negatively on all aspects of your life.
When these muscles have too much tension (hypertonic) they will often cause pelvic pain or urgency and frequency of the bladder and bowels. When they are low-tone (hypotonic) they will contribute to stress incontinence and organ prolapse. You can also have a combination of muscles that are too tense and too relaxed.
Hypertonic muscles can cause the following symptoms:

Hypertonic muscles can cause the following symptoms:
- Urinary frequency, urgency, hesitancy, stopping and starting of the urine stream, painful urination, or incomplete emptying
- Constipation, straining, pain with bowel movements
- Unexplained pain in your low back, pelvic region, hips, genital area, or rectum
- Pain during or after intercourse, orgasm, or sexual stimulation
- Uncoordinated muscle contractions causing the pelvic floor muscles to spasm

Pre and Post Partum Screening and Rehabilitation
Women experience many changes to their bodies over the 9 month pre partum period. As the baby grows there are changes to a woman's posture as well as internal pressures that can lead to low back, thoracic and pubic symphysis pain/discomfort, abdominal muscle weakness as well as pelvic pain, urinary incontinence and prolapse. Some may believe that this is a normal part of the pre partum experience but it is not. We can help to address some of the underlying causes of your specific symptoms which will ultimately help with your labour and delivery.
Pregnancy and delivery can alter the normal anatomy and function of the abdominal wall, back posture and pelvic floor. This can lead women to compensate for this lack of strength and control during all daily living and exercise activities. These poor body habits lead to an overload of muscles, tendons, joints and organs which does not improve (and often worsens) with "regular" exercise.
We can evaluate your post partum physical progress around 6-8 weeks post delivery. If you have had a baby please review the link to the post partum brochure (http://dianelee.ca/documents/post_partum_brochure.pdf) produced by a number of clinical experts in this field. If you identify with any of the issues presented in the brochure it may be that you would benefit from a rehabilitation program specific to your concerns. This is important to prevent future complications and to ensure your post partum health.
